The statement outlines the International Design Education Programme, jointly initiated in 2021 by WEDO, the UN Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries, and Zhejiang University. The programme aims to foster inclusive and practice-based learning models that empower youth in LDCs with green design capabilities and sustainable innovation skills.
Since its launch, the programme has offered full scholarships to master’s students from over 30 LDCs, supported by a multi-stakeholder partnership framework. Its curriculum focuses on sustainable design, industrial innovation, and local development practices - contributing directly to the advancement of several SDGs, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The adoption of this statement by ECOSOC reflects the Council’s recognition of the strategic value of cross-sectoral education initiatives in addressing global development challenges. The programme serves as a practical example of how South-South cooperation, knowledge transfer, and international academic collaboration can accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda.
WEDO has expressed its commitment to further strengthening cooperation with United Nations entities and international partners, advancing inclusive design education as a pathway to sustainable transformation and ensuring that no one is left behind.
