Wanqu Open University of Design is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and cross-industry university alliance, which collects and shares the resources of design students and teachers from different colleges and universities, thus forging a professional design cluster of higher education institutes. Since its establishment in 2018, there are 10 universities at home and abroad have joined, including Zhejiang University, Macau University of Science and Technology, and Eindhoven University of Technology etc. The first batch of 100 master and doctoral students were officially enrolled into the joint training program at the end of November 2018, and more than 300 interdisciplinary students have been trained by 2021. In the future, the student enrollment number will be maintained 100 each year.

Wanqu Open University of Design has gathered a full-time and part-time teaching and research team led by Academician Chen Chun and represented by Professor Ying Fangtian, which is composed of domestic and foreign university teachers with high-level research ability, designers with rich design experience and enterprise elites with planning and business ability.

Cultivation Goals
Wanqu Open University of Design aims to cultivate top talents in innovation and entrepreneurship and facilitate Greater Bay Area to step into the leading edge of a “Global Eco-Design Sourcing Center”, which leads the global market and user demands. The University puts efforts into research and development of advanced technology and innovative design application, and cultivates industrial leading talents with entrepreneurship. The attended students are required to be empowered with 2 systematic competencies, those are systematic competency of innovative thinking and knowledge integration, and systematic competency of innovative design and business planning with market prospect, thus realizing the mission of design driven industrial transformation and upgrade.
Cultivation Mode
Double classes
In the first year, students study theories in relevant departments of member university. In the second year, students will study innovation and entrepreneurship courses at Wanqu Open University of Design ,and carry out relatively independent research projects on technique and management of advanced engineering with application prospect.
Dual tutors
One of the tutors is a professor of the relevant department of member university, who is responsible for teaching theories; The other one is a senior researcher or manager of the Wanqu Open University of Design, who is responsible for providing guidance on students’ research projects, and the two tutors will jointly provide support on thesis supervision.
Dual identities
The admitted students would have dual identities, that he/she is a student studying knowledge and scientific research skills, on the other hand, comparatively, he/she also autonomously engages in scientific and research activities guided by the tutors of Wanqu Open University of Design. Adequate allowances would be granted to students by the research institute, students can share profits made from the transaction and transformation of scientific research achievements.
Double assessments
Students' theoretical learning will be assessed by Member university, and the level of project research will be assessed by Wanqu Open University of Design, thereby their completed scientific research achievements shall reach the domestic advanced level.
