The 2023 Global Mayors' Forum & 6th Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation, co-hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), World Association of Major Metropolises (Metropolis), is held from December 7 to 9 at the Guangzhou Yuexiu International Congress Center (GYICC). The winners of the 6th Guangzhou Award were announced at the Guangzhou Award ceremony on the evening of December 7. The World Eco-Design Conference (UN Consultative NGO) was invited to attend the event. At the award ceremony, the International Design Education (IDE) Program initiated by the United Nations Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries (UN Technology Bank), World Eco-Design Conference (UN Consultative NGO) and Ningbo Innovation Center, Zhejiang University (ZJUNB) provided 20 full scholarships to the cities winning the 6th Guangzhou Award and the Medal of Honor of the 6th Guangzhou Award.
A total of 274 initiatives from 193 cities and regions in 54 countries submitted their applications for the 6th Guangzhou Award. Among them, Bogotá, Colombia, Chalandri, Greece, Gwangju, Republic of Korea, Kampala, Uganda, Xianning, China, won the 6th Guangzhou Award, and Antalya, Türkiye, Cape Town, South Africa, Iztapalapa, Mexico, Jakarta, Indonesia, Kazan, Russia, Mannheim, Germany, Pimpri Chinchwad, India, Ramallah, Palestine, São Paulo, Brazil, Tehran, Iran won the Medal of Honor of the 6th Guangzhou Award.
The Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) is co-sponsored by the City of Guangzhou, the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the World Association of the Major Metropolises (Metropolis). The aim of the Guangzhou Award is to recognize innovation in improving social, economic, and environmental sustainability and good urban governance in cities and regions and, in doing so, to advance the prosperity and quality of life of their citizens. So far six cycles have been held, attracting over 1,600 initiatives worldwide. It has become a global platform for city-to-city learning and the documentation, dissemination, and analysis of the local implementation of global agendas including SDGs and New Urban Agenda (NUA).The World Eco-Design Conference (UN Consultative NGO) has been a key partner of the Guangzhou Award since 2021 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation with the Guangzhou Institute for Urban Innovation (GIUI) on 8 November 2023.
About IDE Program
The IDE Program is a global educational cooperation program initiated in 2021 by the UN Technology Bank, the World Eco-Design Conference (UN Consultative NGO) and the ZJUNB, which provides 50 scholarships for eligible students to study industrial design engineering at the postgraduate level each year. It aims to enhance the industrial design capacity and competitiveness of the BRI countries. From 2021 to 2023, the IDE Program has received 279 applications from around the world, admitting 109 students from 22 BRI countries.
