Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.
 

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

 

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

 

Today, 250 million children and youth are out of school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. It's time to transform education.

 

UNESCO is dedicating the International Day of Education celebrated on 24 January 2024 to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech, a phenomenon which has snowballed in recent years with the use of social media, damaging the fabric of our societies.

 

UNESCO and the Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning are organizing a high-level panel on Learning for Lasting Peace at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. 

 

The event will mobilize Member States, UN agencies and programmes, UN-affiliated NGOs committed to education for peace, teachers, youths and other education stakeholders.

 

Additionally, members of the SDG4 Youth & Student Network will be organizing a panel discussion at the Learning Planet Festival on 24 January at 2pm CET. 

 

The session will introduce the leadership of the renewed UNESCO SDG4 Youth & Student Network and provide a brief overview of the network’s thematic areas for 2024-2025. It will also highlight the key points of the network's input for the zero draft of the Pact of the Future, the key document of the Summit of the Future. Professor Fernando Reimers of Harvard University will provide the closing keynote address.
