The preparatory meeting and stakeholder consultation of the UN 2023 Water Conference were held in October at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The subjects of the meetings are to finalize the themes of the UN 2023 Water Conference and other matters, and also to discuss about the Water Action Agenda. To assure the success of the UN 2023 Water Conference, a webinar was organized by the UN in prior to the Conference. As a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), the World Eco-Design Conference (WEDC) was invited to participate in the webinar and stakeholder consultation.
During the meetings, stakeholders had consultations on the preparation of the United Nations Conference on Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028, and finalized the themes of the interactive dialogues of the UN 2023 Water Conference and other outstanding organizational matters.
At present, the imbalance between water supply and water demand is increasingly critical by days. The growing populations has put the precious resource under tremendous pressure. On the other hand, the rising pollution is destroying the ecosystems of freshwater and coastal aquatic. The UN data indicated that, water scarcity impacts 40% of the world's population, 80% of wastewater flows back into the environment without being treated, and more than 90% disasters are water related. Water resource is crucial for sustainable development and poverty alleviation. Consequently, the clock is ticking on saving water resource and natural environment conservation.
The WEDC has firmly implemented President Xi Jinping’s thoughts on ecological civilization for a long term, and has practiced the philosophy of “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”. By following the ecological layout of natural landscapes, micro ecosystem restoration is conducted in the permanent venue of the World Eco-Design Conference and its surroundings. Mountains, waters, forests and plants are restored as a living community at a time.
The construction of the Yadong River Ecological Belt puts ecological restoration first, which remains the natural form of the River without redundant artificialisation, adopts ecological revetments, combines stormwater management, water ecological restoration, restoration for plant system, and waterside landscaping system, to mitigate river bank erosion, which maintains the biodiversity and stability of the River. After ecological restoration, the riverway that used to be alluvial has been replaced by one with multiple green shores, sightseeing platforms, ecological wetland and waterfront footpath, which is able to achieve the goals of oxygen generating, water and land conservation etc.; Moreover, it has significant ecological values, such as removal of pollutants, air purification, noise reduction, and climate adjustment etc. In 2020, Conghua has been successfully nominated as one of the pilot counties of the construction of the national water system connection and beautiful water countryside with the bonus of Yadong River Ecological Belt being an example, in 2022, the Yadong River management project won the “Individual Award in Ecological Restoration Design” .
In the future, the WEDC will continue to devote to building innovative eco-design system, forming a virtuous cycle in the areas of economy, society and environment, attaining excellence in “Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, and making contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda of the UN.
