The 2024 World Eco-Design Conference: Designing for Sustainable Development was held at the United Nations Headquarters in Vienna on 18 June 2024. Themed "Design · Doing", the conference focused on education, culture and industry, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Scene of the Conference

Supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries (UN Technology Bank), the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations in Vienna, the Representative Office of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Austria and the International Atomic Energy Agency, the event featured exhibitions, speeches, and cultural exchanges to explore global cooperation and innovation in ecological design. Experts and practitioners from around the world shared successful cases, emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural collaboration. Cutting-edge green designs and technologies were showcased in the exhibition to promote industrial design and sustainable innovation, fostering exchanges and partnerships in the design industry.

At the opening ceremony, Ana Paula Nishio De Sousa, Director of the Digital Transformation and AI Strategies of UNIDO, highlighted ecological design as crucial for a green future more than an innovative concept, emphasizing the broad prospects of digital transformation and AI in this field. She also expressed high hopes for the International Design Education Program and Eco-Design Leading Talent Program.

Deodat Maharaj, Managing Director of UN Technology Bank, expressed readiness to collaborate with the World Eco-Design Conference (WEDC) in establishing a comprehensive technical repository for the least developed countries, promoting knowledge sharing and technology transfer. He praised the International Design Education Program for providing essential skills to students from the least developed countries, promoting innovation and sustainable development.

Ying Fangtian, President of WEDC, detailed the WEDC's objectives at the opening ceremony and expressed hopes of contributing to sustainable development through innovative solutions and interdisciplinary collaboration in eco-friendly ecological design practices. During the event, the Eco-Cultural Tourism Industry Alliance of World Eco-Design Conference was formally established. Secretary-General Ms. Si Liya noted that the alliance is committed to advancing eco-cultural tourism standards, selecting eco-cultural tourism cities, and preserving cultural heritage. Through cross-industry cooperation, the alliance aims to promote collaboration and development in the eco-cultural tourism industry.

During the awards ceremony, the ID Award 2024 International Gifts and the 2024 Global Youth Leader Award were presented, garnering global attention and acclaim since their inception. Following expert evaluations, 7 gifts were honored with the ID Award 2024 International Gift, showcasing a perfect blend of creativity and culture from countries such as China, Brazil, and Bangladesh. The 2024 Global Youth Leader Award recognized and supported 20 young leaders who have made outstanding contributions in sustainable development and ecological design, aiming to encourage their advocacy and actions in innovation, sustainability, and environmental protection. These awardees hail from multiple countries including China, Austria, Thailand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Brazil, excelling in fields such as industrial design, investment management, digital technology, cultural exhibitions, new energy, cultural tourism, and materials production.

Award Winning Attendees of the ID Award 2024 International Gifts

Two valuable pieces of porcelain, Beige Glazed Eight Directions Guan Er flat pot and String Bottle, were donated to UNIDO and WEDC by Mr. Ye Kewei, Director of the Hangzhou Ye’s Ge Kiln Museum. Mr. Zhou Le, CEO of Jingdezhen Jingci Lian Technology Co., Ltd., donated Jingdezhen Ming and Qing Official Kiln Blue and White Porcelain (XiaoYin Craftsman Chronicles) to WEDC. The donation of Mr. Ye Kewei and Mr. Zhou Le symbolize the charm of cultural exchange and international cooperation, fostering mutual learning and exchange between cultures, and promoting the international presence of Chinese culture. President Ying Fangtian presented collection certificates to Mr. Ye Kewei and Mr. Zhou Le.

Throughout the conference, Daniel Serra and Farrukh Alimdjanov from UNIDO, winners of the 2024 Global Youth Leader Award Jin Yuxi, as well as Ye Kewei and Zhou Le delivered keynote speeches, sharing insights and practical experiences in technological innovation and sustainable development and discussing how to leverage technology and cultural assets to drive global sustainable development.
