European Academy of Engineering Announces 147 Newly Elected Members for 2026, Including 21 Nobel Laureates
Release date : August 19, 2026

The European Academy of Engineering (EAE) today announced its 2026 cohort of newly elected Members. This year's cohort comprises 147 scholars and experts, with research spanning engineering, fundamental science, biomedicine, artificial intelligence, energy, and the environment.

The newly elected cohort brings together 51 distinguished recipients of major international awards, including laureates of the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, Fields Medal, Breakthrough Prize, Wolf Prize, and Eni Award, representing some of the highest honours in global science and engineering:

21 Nobel Prize laureates

6 Turing Award and Fields Medal recipients

10 Breakthrough Prize recipients

6 Wolf Prize recipients

8 Eni Award recipients

Nobel Prize Laureates

David Baker — Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Washington and recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He pioneered computational methods for designing proteins with novel structures and functions, establishing a powerful engineering approach to biomolecule design.

Katalin Karikó — Research Professor at the University of Szeged and recipient of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Her research laid the foundation for in vitro-transcribed mRNA as a platform for protein therapy.

Moungi G. Bawendi — Lester Wolfe Professor of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and recipient of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is a pioneer of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals.

Sir M. Stanley Whittingham — Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Binghamton University, State University of New York, and recipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He developed the first rechargeable lithium battery based on intercalation chemistry, laying the foundation for modern lithium-ion energy storage.

Turing Award and Fields Medal Recipients

Jack Dongarra — Founding Director of the Innovative Computing Laboratory at the University of Tennessee and recipient of the 2021 Turing Award, recognised for his contributions to high-performance computing.

Vinton G. Cerf — Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist at Google and recipient of the 2004 Turing Award. He played a central role in the development of Internet and packet-networking technologies.

This year's laureates also include Leslie Valiant (Harvard University), Silvio Micali (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Jean-Pierre Serre (Collège de France), and Stephen Smale (University of California, Berkeley), among other internationally renowned leaders in computer science and mathematics.

About EAE

Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, the European Academy of Engineering (EAE) is an international academy whose Members are rigorously elected by their peers across 13 specialised engineering classes. Its membership spans academia, industry, and public institutions, and includes Nobel Laureates, Turing Award laureates, Fields Medalists, and recipients of other major international distinctions.

Election to the EAE is regarded as one of the highest honours in the international engineering community, recognising sustained excellence in engineering research, technological innovation, education, and industrial leadership.

Spanning disciplines from Nobel Prize-winning chemistry and medicine to Turing Award-winning computer science, and from artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to biomedicine, advanced materials, and clean energy, the 2026 cohort reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary and global character of engineering excellence today.

147 new Members. 51 international award laureates. The European Academy of Engineering's 2026 cohort reaffirms its role at the forefront of the global engineering community.
